Sometimes there was nothing else to read, on the BART, if you were tired of the sports section being green, and didn't want to read another Herb Caen piece. In 1989 there was a piece in the paper about coming out day, and how newly out folks might want to tie-in to one of the substratas of the gay subculture for support that would exactly fit their proclivities. Listed were descriptions of: |
Bears |
Leather dressers |
Fisters |
Drag Queens |
Chubby Chasers |
You probably don't want a full listing. |
Gary Schildt came back with the perfect comeback in a responding column. He simply said, this was one really honest and witty writter as anyone who read his, And the Band Played On, knows, "I guess we now can explain disco as the mass rehearsal for gay sexual activity, where everyone seeks to practice together with a totally compatable crowd." |
