Brett Ratner (After the Sunset) will direct MGM's gambling caper Breaking Vegas, with Kevin Spacey producing, reports Variety.

The project is based on Ben Mezrich's nonfiction bestseller "Bringing Down the House," about six M.I.T. students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Vegas casinos for millions in winnings. The movie has been in search of a new title since Steve Martin's and Queen Latifah's Bringing Down the House became a box office hit.

Peter Steinfeld, who wrote Be Cool, MGM's sequel to Get Shorty, penned the adaptation, which could start filming in early 2005. Space may play the supporting role of the students' M.I.T. professor.

Ratner will first helm Fox's heist actioner Josiah's Canon, with Sean Connery. The director is also prepping New Line's third installment in the "Rush Hour" franchise and is attached to helm two untitled pitches set up at Columbia Pictures.
