What you describe sounds like "normal" blackjack or the game of twenty-one for a multi-deck shoe. Usually, in a single deck, the players cards are face down and in multi-deck the players cards are face up.

 

But yes, there are a number of variations in the game and each casino has its own rules for the game. Some rules are good for the player and some rules are not.
