It's not the "unbalance" that's causing you headaches, it's the lack of true count conversion. Without true count, any system (balanced or unbalanced) is most accurate where ever you choose for it to be most accurate. Pick a place, then choose your running count indices accordingly. The K-O authors chose to make the count most accurate when exactly half the deck or shoe has been played, presumably after doing lots of tedious research proving that to be a good idea.

If you are uncomfortable with that, as I am, use true count conversion. It's not difficult.
