You are correct. K-O does perform well dispite this problem.
I have the same concerns as you when I play. To alleviate
this problem I use "bet fudging" which essentially moves
the Key Count based on a rough estimation of your position
in the shoe. If I am in the 1st third of the shoe, my Key
Count will be a little lower. If I am in the middle of the
shoe, I play it straight. And if I am in the last deck or
half deck before the shuffle card, the Key Count is a little
a little higher.

I hope to get this technique added to the next edition of
book. I will also post it publicly for those folks who
already have the book.
