First step is to learn basic strategy, and learn it perfectly. Can be found in most books and on the web, I think www.bjmath is the site, if not, you'll find it. Don't buy books or learn the mistaken basic strategy espoused by an author named John Patrick. YOU MUST PLAY PERFECT BASIC STRATEGY FOR YOUR PARTICULAR RULES/NO. OF DECKS/ETC. Play like a machine, never playing hunches, never varying from basic strategy.
Then memorize a card-counting system. The hot new system in our world is called KO, it is a simple, level-one system that anyone can learn and master in a matter of weeks. It's what I've switched to, and it's about all you need. You can order the book right from this site, it's called Knockout Blackjack by Vancura & Fuchs.
You don't mention how many decks you're up against or if surrender is available, but from what you do tell us you've got the makings of a decent game there. Ask questions, read posts, stay in touch.
