Halves used properly and SBA 5.0

Posted by Troy on 22 January 2000, at 4:52 p.m.

Which way do people mostly use halves? I use 1 2 2 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -2 and divide by as infinitely accurately as I can to get as accurate
a TC as possible and compare that to my index generated from SBA 5.0 using DIVISOR of 1 and Deck Estimate of 0.

I have two concerns. First, I was thinking this is a better method for using halves than keeping the card values as I do but dividing by
half decks (or counting card values in 1/2s and dividing by whole decks - these two ways produce the same indexes) because there
will be more indexing bins to choose from the way I do it. eg. I buy insurance at 7. The other way of using halves creates an index of
3. In otherwords the spacing between bins is smaller the way I do it.

My second concern is I may have been using my indexes wrong. I would divide my running count by as accurate a divisor of
remaining cards as I can (eg. divisor of 1.2,1.7,2,2.1,etc as good as my eyes can determine) to get a tc and then I compare that to my
index to make a decision. But if the divisor is 1 in SBA then should I not be dividing ONLY by only whole decks (1,2,3 or 4 for a 4
deck game)?

Or perhaps I have been doing it wrong but as it turns it is more accurate than SBA does it (but the indexes are based on whole deck
divisors)?
