Re: Low Penetration - - Help!

A 2-decker with 50% penetration is usually not playable unless the rules are outstanding. If you can find a 2-deck game with soft-17 rules and double after splits the casino edge off the top is about 0.17% -- which is not bad, but you will still need to spread some money to make it worth your while. For example, the Mirage in Las Vegas has this game and their penetration is about 65%. Not quite as big a spread is required for the Mirage game but it is still a tough game -- especially with their quality surveillance.

If you must play a poorly penetrated 2-decker don't expect much more than a long-term break even. You can improve on this a bit by learning Schlesinger's 18 top play variations and a bit more by learning all of the play variations possible.

On the other hand, I would rather play a 6-deck game with 2-decks cut off then butt heads with a dealer who cuts 50% in a 2-deck game. Your life as a card counter will also last a lot longer playing the shoe games!

One last comment - if you do start playing the shoes I would recommend you change your count to something like the Hi-Lo or any count that includes the Ace in the count. Shoes are not quite as exciting to play as the hand-held games but much easier to get money on the table.
