The number of hands I play depends entirely upon how the count progresses. If the count stays high I might get 1/2 or 3/4 of a shoe. If the count drops maybe only a couple of hands. In regards to the playing time question, playing time is greatly reduced but no money is wasted on neutral or negative counts. The point being that the time spent back counting could be spent losing money in negative counts. Probably about 10 or 15 minutes of good play an hour. I would also like to add that I live in a part of the country where only 8 deck is available so finding a better game is not an option.
