For the game you describe, the proper basic strategy play would be to hit an 11 vs. Ace instead of doubling. It is only appropriate BS to double 11's vs. Aces in a single deck game. The same thing applies to doubling hard eights versus fives and sixes: single deck only.

As far as splitting fours against a 5 or a 6, that is the proper play if double after splits is allowed. If it isn't, hit the pair of fours instead of splitting them.
