Re: An Open Letter to Blackjack Dealers

There are many, many ways a dealer can affect your game. It's detailed in my book, Blackjack The Smart Way (www.blackjacktoday.com) and in my seminars (the next one is in Las Vegas, July 31). And tipping should be part of an intelligent STRATEGY. In other words, DON'T tip unless the dealer shows signs of being friendly -- attitude, and ACTION. Tipping for no reason gives dealers no incentive to help you out, and spoils it for the other players, too. If dealers learn that they must "put out" before they make a tip -- much like a waitress or waiter must give good service to get a tip -- they might show less disdain for players and be less inclined to screw your game up. The obvious example is at casinos where the policy is to allow dealers discretionary shuffling. If the guy or gal is putting the re-shuffle card so high that you're only seeing 25% penetration (I have seen this NOT infrequently) WHY would you tip them? Doesn't that indicate to you they're out to hurt you? Yet, time and time again I see most players tipping just to tip. And -- please -- don't let them bully you into tipping. Just leave their table if it gets unpleasant. Giving tips to bullies gives them no incentive to be nice.
