I use "best" half quite often

You may be better off just playing "best" half. This is not as profitable as being able to isolate a section of high cards, however, you get to play more. When playing "best" half I will often just flat bet with "medium" bets if I can get a slight "off-the-top" advantage. As I count down the shoe, the count takes more and more a priority in how I bet. If the count goes negative as I play I know I've done my job. Eventually (depending on what the best half count difference is), you have to back-off because the count has gone "too" negative. If the count rises I think to myself that I may have made a mistake and also back-off until the count itself justifies a bigger bet.
