You really made me laugh about the "good cop-bad cop routine" thing. I wish I had Robert's age and energy and my life experience in one body.
It think that Robert is an intelligent but overly sensitive young man. That is my reading. The standards of normal dialogue are being broken by too many posters.
What Robert said in one of his posts is very true that "30 second spot reply is the norm...". Unfortunately he is also a participant among others. He has not yet gotten over his hurt from earlier arguments when too many posters ganged on him. He said he thought these were "high school" boys but discovered that they were people over 40 and he resents it very much. Those are his feelings and his reality.
I tend to be by nature supportive of underdogs when too many posters gang up against any person. Of course that does not include gross language and profanities or character assasination. And when Robert used profanities I agreed with the action taken by Michael Dalton. I also advised in one of my posts there was nothing to be gained by his outburst.
The internet is a different world than our daily real life activities. It is impossible to reinforce or confirm by body language that you really do not want or mean to hurt the other person even though you may sound harsh.
I believe that the moderator acting as a REFERIE should intervene and resolve these kinds of problems or situations. The situation is complex as the participants are all so different. And the role of a referie has not been or may never be applicable here. So in Robert's perspective, it is them against me. It is very hard to mix students of several grades and levels of education and have a meaningful dialogue for all.
I am experiencing something similar to what Robert has felt. People want my final statement right now! If you can't say it in "ten words and thirty seconds" and you don't have a math formula, then you are a Voodoo and Witch Doctor! This does not bother me at all. In fact I am having fun now but may get too busy tomorrow with other things.
I think we all need to show more respect to each other without being fanatical about our own beliefs. I had heard that the average user of the internet has the patience of a gnat. Now I know. I think these hastily written kneejerk posts should be avoided by all of us. Strange enough that I have been criticized for being the opposite. It is the worl of internet.
